Kelly Johnson, Registered Nurse
David Maier is a Registered Nurse with a flair for technology, so when an aging vital sign monitor breaks down, he’s often called in to troubleshoot. “I have a high tolerance for frustration,” he says.
He’s looking forward to the day when all the aging, unreliable vital sign monitors at Royal University Hospital are replaced with reliable state-of-the-art machines. “A lot of the problems with the old monitors aren’t something you can tinker with anymore. They just need to be replaced,” says Maier, a Coordinator in the Intensive Care Unit at Royal University Hospital.
Maier is one of three designated Staff Champions who have lent their names and faces to the Royal Vital Care appeal. The other two Staff Champions are Kelly Johnson, Registered Nurse and Clinical Nurse Specialist for Heart Health, and Dr. Anita Chakravarti, Anesthesiologist, Royal University Hospital and University of Saskatchewan College of Medicine.
“I decided to become a Staff Champion because I know the importance of having monitors that work every time. I’m very excited about that,” says Johnson.
As respected and dedicated medical specialists, they’re supporting the campaign to raise $2.8 million (including approximately 10 percent from health care personnel) to replace the aging vital sign monitors and defibrillators at Royal University Hospital, and the installation of a central monitoring system.
Dr. Chakravarti spent more than 25 years in OR, where vital sign monitors are critical for monitoring unconscious patients during surgery. The new monitors will “increase patient safety by decreasing the likelihood of errors and promoting new initiatives in quality of care and quality assurance,” says Dr. Chakravarti, who also serves as a Volunteer Board Member of Royal University Hospital Foundation.
