Charitable Bequest

A simple yet meaningful way to build a legacy of care while reducing your estate taxes.

A charitable bequest in your Will is a powerful promise. We are always moved when a donor's last wishes include support for Royal University Hospital. In return, we make a promise to fulfill those wishes.

A charitable bequest instructs your executor or trustee to leave specified assets to the charity of your choice. It is easy to do, it does not impact your current income and it reduces your estate taxes while making a lasting difference in your communities.

Having a Will not only gives you the peace of mind of knowing loved ones are looked after, it ensures you control the distribution of your assets. Did you know that without a Will, the decision of what to do with your life's earnings is left up to the courts?

It's Your Choice
A charitable Will bequest lets you decide how you want your gift to be used. RUH Foundation certainly appreciates gifts designated to "greatest healthcare needs". But we are also pleased to honour specific requests, such as support for a special department or program.

Different types of bequests allow you to tailor your gift to your needs:

  • specific bequest – a specific sum of money, a stated percentage of your estate, or a specific property such as real estate or securities
  • residual bequest – a percentage of all that remains of your estate after paying debts, taxes, expenses and other bequests
  • contingent bequest – a portion or all of your estate in the event of the death of other named beneficiaries
  • residual bequest subject to life interest – a percentage of your estate following the death of other named beneficiaries who have the use of the assets for their lifetime.

RUH Foundation will issue a tax receipt for the value of your bequest. This will reduce overall tax on your estate.

Planning Tip: Keep in mind that healthcare needs do change, so try not to be too specific. Designating your gift to the "greatest needs" in your area of interest will give RUH the ability to use your gift where it will have the most impact.
