"Our medical complex will always require funds over and
above government funding if we are to keep within the reach of
other comparable university teaching hospitals."
They Built Better Than They Knew - Saskatchewan's Royal University
Hospital, A History: 1955-1992, by Dr. Louis Horlick
The RUH Foundation was established in 1983 to help make our best
even better. As the above quote illustrates, it was time to create
a fundraising office to safeguard the current practices and future
developments of Saskatchewan's premier teaching hospital.
The Foundation, located on the Mall Level of Royal University
Hospital, works closely with key decision makers at RUH to help
support areas of greatest need. For example, purchasing or upgrading
equipment, supporting staff education, and funding medical research.
To date, over $30 million (in net proceeds) has been raised by
the RUH Foundation.

RUH opened on Saturday, May 14, 1955 during a public ceremony
officiated by then Premier Tommy Douglas. The seven-wing, seven-story
hospital had taken eight years to build.
The opening of RUH fulfilled a huge need in the province:
- a first-class hospital facility with diagnostic equipment
and laboratories was now linked with the University of Saskatchewan
College of Medicine to deliver a comprehensive health program
- a partnership between training and healthcare was in
place to create the most important medical centre in the province,
one which would raise the standard of medical treatment throughout
Saskatchewan.
On February 14, 1992, as a result of regionalization of health
services throughout Saskatchewan, RUH became a member agency of
the Saskatoon Health
Region. Within SHR, the hospital serves as a leader in providing
tertiary acute-care services for the province. |
